What is Lunar New Year?

History of Lunar New Year

What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year – also known as Chinese New Year, Vietnamese Tet, Korean Solnal, or Tibetan Losar – is a spring festival typically celebrated in Asian countries which begins at the first new moon of the Lunar calendar and ends on the next full moon, 15 days later. The Lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, so the dates of Lunar New Year may vary slightly from year to year. This Lunar New Year- the Year of the Tiger – is celebrated on February 1, 2022.

Lunar New Year around the world

Why do we celebrate Lunar New Year?

It is a celebration centred around removing the bad and old, to welcome the new and good. This is a time where families come together to worship ancestors, pray for good harvest, and remove negative energy and spirits.

Each year is represented by one of the twelve zodiac animals. The date and month of your birth determines your animal and element sign. Much like western astrology, each animal and element represents different meanings, compatibilities and personality traits.

What are the 5 elements and what do they mean?

In the Chinese Zodiac, there are five corresponding elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These elements represent certain personality traits which may help with understanding yourself and your relationship between others.

The five elements of the Chinese Zodiac were derived from Wu Xing (trans. Five processes) philosophy, where the elements are used to describe the relationship and interdependence between all things. No element is better or worse, but rather all work together in harmony. Without one element, the other element does not exist. Learn more about your zodiac and element here.
