The words sustainable, ethical and eco-friendly living are phrases you have undoubtedly seen and heard from many brands. But what does this really mean and what are businesses actually doing to stay truthful to these words?
The team at S-kin Studio Jewelry have always believed in full transparency when it comes to sharing how we stay true to our commitment of producing sustainable and ethical jewellery. Product
We source our gold-fill findings from Brazil and the USA as they have the most experience and knowledge in sustainably producing gold-fill. Our materials are never wasted and we ensure that it is either recycled in another production run or reused for sample production until it is finally purchased. This method of recycling minimises excessive wastage and ensures that materials are used to their greatest capacity.
50% of our sterling silver is sourced from the USA and the remainder is sourced ethically from India. All of our freshwater pearls are sustainably sourced from China & Hong Kong and we use synthetic cubic zircons instead of diamonds unless they are proven to be lab made.
Materials
We are proud to integrate eco-friendly packaging across all our shipping goods so it as effective as it is kind to the environment. To package your jewels, we may use a combination of canvas pouches, paper boxes, biodegradable protective wrap packaging and compostable satchels.
We use canvas pouches and paper boxes as they are durable, biodegradable and great for reusability. Our biodegradable protective wrap packaging, made by GreenWrap, is a bubble wrap alternative that steers clear of harmful plastic polymer film and prevents excessive landfill and toxic waste. Our compostable postage satchel, made by The Better Packaging Co, are 100% biodegradable, compostable and represents a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions in manufacturing when compared to traditional plastic.
Packaging
Commitment to ethical manufacturing means that our products are only produced in small batches and our turnover is often longer than average.
All of our deliveries offset greenhouse gas emissions by opting for carbon neutral shipping and contributes to investments in climate protection projects. We recycle all the packaging we receive and try to reuse as much of it as possible when sending our own packages to suppliers and wholesalers.

As consumers, our team at S-kin Studio have always made a conscious effort to shop from eco-friendly, ethical and climate aware businesses to best reduce our carbon footprint and encourage sustainable living. This dedication to reducing our environmental impact has translated into S-kin Studio Jewelry's actions towards reducing waste and consuming mindfully.
The sustainability practices we regulate in our office and physical store aims to encourage mindful consumption. As a small business, we also implement team initiatives to nurture an overall sustainability oriented work culture.
Our office supplies have also been carefully selected to ensure that we can recycle or reuse as much of our resources as possible.
Office
When deciding on a supplier for our bespoke jewellery collections we knew that we had to find someone that had the same ethos and values as we did. Creative Director, Chi Mai, spent many months searching for an ethical manufacturer that we could confidently work with. Discovered in the home of jewelry production, our manufacturers are based in India and China.

Production
We are aware that all of our actions contribute to the health and welfare of our planet and we want to be as kind and gentle as possible to place that has offered us somewhere to call home. To work towards this we have energy and water reduction initiatives in our office and boutique space and we partner with sustainability organisations to further our environmental impact.
We are a proud member of 1% for the Planet. An organisation founded on the grounds that we have a responsibility to protect our planet, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Blue Ribbon Flies founder Craig Mathews decided to start a global movement.
