Ramen from "Ponyo"
In the opening scene of "Ponyo," Sosuke's mother cooks a delicious-looking bowl of ramen for him. The broth is rich and savory, and the toppings of green onions and pork look absolutely scrumptious. Want to make your own? Check this recipe out, it even teaches you how you can do the “magic trick” to have your ham, egg, and spring onions magically appear after you lift your lid, just like from the movie!
Breakfast from "Howl's Moving Castle"
An absolute favourite, the breakfast that Sophie prepares for Howl in "Howl's Moving Castle" is a feast for the eyes and ears. The way Calcifer (the fire) pan fried the eggs and bacon lives in our head rent-free. This final tasty spread includes fried eggs, sausages, toast, and fresh fruit. The vibrant colours and intricate details make this meal look like a work of art. Looking to impress your other half who’s Ghibli-obsessed? This TikTok has the recipe for the bread, and how to cook the bacon and eggs!
Bento box from "My Neighbor Totoro"
Mei and Satsuki's mother pack them a bento box full of colorful goodies in "My Neighbor Totoro." A bento box is one of the most popular ways of expressing love in Japan. They require a lot of effort in preparation and are always made in advance. The box includes rice, a smelt fish, pickled plum, edamame, and a Japanese fish flake topping sakura denbu, making it a memorable meal. Watch this video (or read her blog post) for the full tutorial on how to make this bento box!
Siberia Cake from “The Wind Rises”
In the movie "The Wind Rises", Jiro and Naoko enjoy the Siberia Cake at a fancy restaurant in Germany. The dessert is beautiful and elegant; with triangular sponge cakes named kasutera or castella over sweet bean jelly. The dessert is named after Siberia due to its need to be kept extremely cold. Make your own Siberia Cake with this video tutorial.
Pancakes from "Kiki's Delivery Service"
In “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, she makes pancakes and mentions how eating pancakes is her down-on-her-luck thing, lamenting that she would have to eat pancakes forever if she didn’t make enough money. Even so, this humble breakfast looked really good, with her fluffy souffle pancake, heirloom tomatoes and sausage. Wake up and make them yourself with this video!
Hot chocolate from "The Secret World of Arrietty"
In "The Secret World of Arrietty," Arrietty and her family make hot chocolate using cubes of sugar and a little bit of magic. The frothy, steaming cups of hot chocolate look like the perfect treat for a cold day, perfect for Melbourne these days. Make the best hot chocolate today!
